English language requirements - Oxford Brookes University (2023)

If English is not your first language then you will need to show that your English language skills are at a high enough level to succeed in your studies.

The entry requirement for your course will be expressed as an IELTS level and refers to the IELTS Academic version of this test. We are now also accepting the IELTS Indicator test, you can find out more about the test on the IELTS Indication site. The University however does accept a wide range of additional English language qualifications, which can be found below.

However, some courses may ask for a higher score and we regularly review our guidance relating to individual state boards. If you have any concern about meeting the English language requirement of your programme, we would always recommend taking an IELTS or other internationally recognised alternative English language test.

If you are applying for a degree level course then we may accept other qualifications:

  • If you have an academic qualification that was taught in English then this can show us that you meet the UKVI's language requirements

  • If you are not able to take an UKVI approved test then we may be able to accept an alternative qualification. We may ask why you are not able to take a SELT as part of the admissions process.

  • If you are from or have studied in a majority English speaking country then you may not have to prove your English language level for visa purposes.
